- Net Losses - The amount lost after the wager is deducted from the payout.
- Net Winnings - The amount won after the wager is deducted from the payout.
O
- Odds - The statistical probability or likelihood that a certain event such as a Royal Flush will occur. Click here for Poker Odds.
- Outrun - To defeat or beat. In other words, if you lose at a video poker machine, you can say that the machine outran me.
P
- Pat Hand - An initial hand dealt that is a winning hand. In other words, you keep all five cards on the initial deal, since no
other card can improve upon your winning hand. For example, if you are dealt a Royal Flush or four aces at the first deal,
you should keep those five cards.
- Payback - The long term expected return of a video poker game. This is preferably expressed as a percentage, and also expressed as the
Expected Value (EV). The long term EV should be greater than 1. In other words, the long term expected return should be more than 100%
if you expect to make money.
- Pay off - The amount paid to you for a winning hand. This is usually expressed on a per coin basis. For example, a Full
House in a standard Jacks or Better game with five coins bet pays 45 coins which is also expressed as a 9 to 1 payoff.
- Payout Schedule - Each video poker machine's payoff schedule should be accessible for viewing on it's screen or on your computer screen
for Internet Casinos. You will see a table that shows the number of coins paid for each possible winning hand for each possible number of coins bet.
- Payout Table - The numbers you see signify the amount of credits that you get if you draw the particular hand indicated.
- Payout (Payoff) - The actual payout occurs when you are cashing out. Some coinless machines now print out a voucher. Online casino software
simply keeps a running account of the money in your casino account that you can have paid to you when you are ready.
- Perfect Play - Making every play for the absolute highest Expected Value. Perfect play is the only way to achieve the maximum payouts
on any video poker game over time by playing each hand mathematically correct and betting the maximum.
- Pick'em Video Poker - You are dealt 2 single cards and 2 decks of 3 cards each - only 4 cards are visible. Your job is to pick one of the
2 stacked piles and your strategy relies on comparing the visible cards to what may be contained in the 2 sets of hidden cards.
- Progressive Jackpot - This usually is for jackpot for a Royal Flush payoff that grows as players play. Several machines or even many casinos
are linked together so that each bet at any of the participating video poker machines or casinos increases the jackpot. When someone wins the
jackpot, it is reset to a predetermined starting value. Note: You can't win the jackpot unless you bet the maximum amount.

- Quads - Four of a kind. For example, you are dealt 7-7-7-7-Q.

- Rag - A useless card that does nothing for your hand.
- Random - To say that cards are drawn at random means that no card is more likely to be drawn than another.
- Random Number Generator - A program also called an algorithm that is used to generate random numbers.
- Rank - The numerical value of a card as opposed to its suit.
- Royal Flush - A hand containing a Ten, Jack, Queen, King, and Ace all of the same suit. This is the highest hand in video poker that
doesn't use wild cards.
