Rank Poker Hands
Click here for a list of our recommended online casinos that offer poker play.
From The Strongest To The Weakest Poker Hand:
Royal Flush: Ten, Jack, Queen, King, Ace of the same suit. This is what you dream about. A royal flush is an ace-high straight flush
which is the best possible hand in poker. As you know, there are only four royal flushs in the deck, and you could play
for money all your life and never get one. |
Straight Flush:
Straight with all five cards in the same suit. That's right, five sequenced cards, and all
of them of the same suit. If two people have a straight flush, then the rank of the highest
card decides who is the happy winner. |
Four Of A Kind:
Four cards of the same number or face value ("quads").
This is a five-card hand that consists of four cards of any rank such as four kings and one unrelated card.
If two people each have four of a kind, the player with the higher rank wins. For example, four kings beats
four queens. |
Full House:
Three cards of one number or face value and two cards of another number or face value. If more than one player
has a full house, the full house with the highest ranking three of a kind ("trips") wins. The rank of the full house is
determined by the three cards and not the pair. |
Flush:
Five cards of the same suit, but not in rank order. If there is more than one flush, the hand with the highest rank order or card(s) wins.
Of course, the cards don't have to be sequenced because if they were, you would have a straight flush. |
Straight:
Five cards in sequence that aren't of the same suit creates a straight. An Ace can be used in the highest straight
(10, J, Q, K, A) and the lowest straight (A, 2, 3, 4, 5). If there is more than one straight, the high cards
in each sequence determine the winning hand. For example, a seven-high straight beats a six-high straight.
|
Three Of A Kind:
Three cards of the rank or face value (a.k.a.trips or a set) plus two unrelated cards make up a three-of-a-kind hand.
When someone says that they have a set of kings or trip of kings, they are referring to having three kings.
|
Two Pairs:
If two players have two pair, the hand with the highest pair wins. If they have the same high pair, whoever
has the second highest pair wins. If they have the same two pair,
whoever has the highest fifth card ("kicker") wins. |
One Pair:
Two cards of the same rank or face value plus three unrelated cards. If two players have the same pair, the highest outside side card or kicker wins.
|
High Card:
This is also called 'no pair' where you have five unrelated cards. In this situation, the hand with the highest card wins.
In the case where you may have one player with A-Q-9-4-2, and another player has A-10-8-5-3, the rank order determines
the winner. The A-Q is higher than the A-10. |
